Leeds, Sunday 19 June 2011. A disabled Iraq veteran, an airborne TA soldier, and a team of 24 intrepid staff from Simplyhealth went 'gone the extra mile' for us (well, 6.2 miles, to be exact!). The team took part in the Jane Tomlinson Run For All 10K race on Sunday 19th July, raising over £3,200 in sponsorship between them.
John Ward, a serving member of 299 Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers (V) currently supporting 23 Engineer Regiment, a part of 16 Air Assault Brigade, ran the course in his full combat order, while The Forgotten Heroes Chairman and disabled Iraq veteran Adam Douglas completed the course in a wheelchair. John was collecting and being sponsored for the run via BT's mydonate site (you can still donate), and so far has raised over £550.00 for The Forgotten Heroes by pushing 15 stone of Adam around the 10 kilometre course.
Steve Rushforth, from Simplyhealth, said, "The sacrifices our troops are making are huge, so we felt that we should try to do something to support them. An important part of our work as a company is helping less able people to live independent lives. This is strongly aligned with the support work that The Forgotten Heroes charity does to help injured troops and their families. I hope the money we’ve raised will go some way towards helping the charity with their vital work with the carers and families of disabled service personnel."
John Ward commented: "I ran in my full combat kit to represent what our service personnel have to go through. My choice of charity is dedicated to assisting our wounded or injured servicemen and women together with their families and carers whose lives have changed dramatically in the service of their country."
Adam Douglas, Chairman of The Forgotten Heroes, said: "We'd like to thank Simplyhealth for their hard work helping us to raise vital funds for our mission with disabled forces personnel, their carers and families. Simplyhealth have been a big help to us since we started working with them early this year, and we look forward to working with them more in the future".
